Through The Archway's Takeaway from Hunter Biden's Memoir 'Beautiful Things'

PARKLAND, Fla. - April 19, 2021 - (Newswire.com)

Hunter Biden writes in his latest memoir "in the last five years alone, my two-decades-long marriage has dissolved, guns have been put in my face, and at one point I dropped clean off the grid, living in $59-a-night Super 8 motels off I-95 while scaring my family even more than myself."

He describes falling into a deep addiction after the passing of his older brother, Beau. He credits his wife with helping him find sobriety.

Addiction is a disease. The language we use with our brothers and sisters struggling with addiction is powerful. It can be that last push to get your loved one help or push them away and further into addiction. Let's use words to heal and support.

Whether you have plans to approach someone, or anticipate loved ones approaching you about an uncomfortable topic there are ways to avoid unproductive or explosive conversations. Follow these five tips to help achieve a productive and meaningful exchange:

  1. Reflect.
Take a moment to think about what the person has said and reflect before responding.

  2. Set conversation goals.
A good start to a productive conversation is making sure both parties are on the same page about conversation goals. Work towards a mutual understanding about a perceived issue first before going into problem solving.

  3. Humanize.
Putting themselves in the other person's shoes will help in understanding another person's perspective and lead to a more fruitful conversation.

  4. Activated emotions.
Being aware of emotions and those of the people around will help you the conversation flow.

  5. Redirect.
If trying to diffuse the conversation isn't fruitful and the emotions are getting too large, it's time to shift the conversation. Ask the other person for a moment of pause and re-evaluate the information.
