CAST Rewards Code Quality in First Ever Fishackathon

CAST, the leader in software analysis and measurement, today announced its sponsorship of the first ever Fishackathon. Yes, you read that right. In conjunction with the U.S. Department of State’s “Our Ocean” Conference, the Secretary’s Office of Global Partnership brought us a new type of hackathon: the Fishackathon. This June, the coding community will answer the call to help solve one of the world’s greatest challenges while also elevating the idea that great execution is equal to great ideas and design.

Small-scale and artisanal fisheries -- which produce half of the fish caught for consumption -- are being confronted with mounting pressure from overfishing, marine degradation, increasing fuel costs, competition from commercial vessels, and illegal fishing. In response, the State Department has coordinated four Fishackathons, to be held on June 13th. For 24 hours, some of the best developers from around the globe will come together to design and create apps that provide solutions for the sustainable management of fisheries. These apps will ultimately help fishermen work more safely and efficiently, while allowing them to report catches, build the capacity for better management, and create networks to improve the monitoring of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

Unlike other hackathons, solutions that demonstrate reliability and sustainability will be recognized with special awards. Fishackathon developers will be scanning their software using CAST Highlight to assess the code’s reliability, complexity, and maintainability. Equipped with Highlight’s rapid code scanning that identifies code patterns and anti-code patterns, developers will get a top-down view on their application’s potential risks and excessive complexity.

“Highlight assesses the code’s reliability, complexity, and maintainability based on rapid code scanning that identifies code patterns and anti-patterns to evaluate the application's potential risks and excessive complexity,” said Pete Pizzutillo, worldwide director product marketing at CAST. “It’s crucial that the Fishackathon developers take into account the software risk and code quality of their apps at an early stage, and we’re happy to help manage that.”

Fishackathon entries with the best overall score will receive awards ranging from $5,000 cash to a trip to an international fishery directly benefitting from the application.
