Nadrich & Cohen Accident Injury Lawyers Oppose California Speed Governor Bill

Nadrich & Cohen Accident Injury Lawyers oppose SB-961, a bill introduced in California mandating speed governors on new vehicles sold in the state.

Nadrich & Cohen Accident Injury Lawyers, a California-based personal injury law firm, opposes SB-961, a recently proposed bill that would mandate speed governors on all new vehicles sold or made in California as of 2027.

The speed governors would make vehicles physically incapable of exceeding the posted speed limit by more than 10 miles per hour.

Jeffrey Nadrich, the managing partner of the firm, explained speed governors could be dangerous in an emergency.

“Just last year we saw residents of Lahaina, Hawaii who were trying to flee a wildfire and were unable to do so. Likewise, what if somebody needs to flee an emergency of any kind? In this situation, the ability to control the speed of your vehicle can be a matter of life or death,” Nadrich said.

Nadrich also questioned the cost of the new bill.

“These governors will increase the prices of new vehicles, and Californians are already struggling to stay afloat due to the high cost of living in the state. The last thing they need is an additional expense in the form of this mandated car feature.”

Nadrich noted that the bill may not be as effective as intended since black market services to disengage governors will likely arise.

The bill would also require the installation of side guards on large trucks to prevent vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians from being sucked underneath trucks during accidents. Nadrich described this requirement as “burdensome to all independent drivers and businesses using California roadways for trucking transport.”

“This will be an additional cost incurred by business owners and drivers, and there is no need for legislative intervention on this matter,” Nadrich said.
