Craig Layt, MBBS, FRACS, a Gold Coast plastic surgeon and the head of The Layt Clinic, explains what individuals should look for when considering the doctor they will entrust with their aesthetic enhancement needs.
Gold Coast, QLD – As the field of plastic surgery and aesthetic enhancement continues to advance, so too do the numbers of both women and men who choose to undergo procedures to rejuvenate their appearance and help them feel more confident in the way they look. Dr Craig Layt, a Gold Coast plastic surgeon who serves as the director of The Layt Clinic, says the rise in popularity of plastic surgery and less invasive cosmetic enhancement procedures makes it even more important for prospective patients to be aware of things they need to look for when deciding upon whom they will entrust with their care. With some careful research and scrutinisation, Dr Layt says, individuals considering how to choose a plastic surgeon can narrow down their selections and increase the chances that they will be treated by an experienced and qualified doctor who can provide results that meet or even exceed their expectations.
First and foremost, Dr Layt explains, patients should make sure that the plastic surgeon they are considering has the credentials necessary to perform those types of surgeries. Researching their biographies (which are often listed on the practice’s website) and their educational history can be a good start. Whether they are members of plastic surgery organisations such as the Australasian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or other similar groups can also be strong indicators of a plastic surgeon’s skills and experience, as many of these organisations have rigorous requirements for membership. Additionally, determining whether the surgeon performs major cosmetic surgeries at an accredited surgical facility can be very helpful in evaluating his or her credentials. Dr Layt says those facilities are under a governance program that only allows plastic surgeons who are properly accredited to perform procedures there. Dr Layt himself holds the title of Specialist Plastic Surgeon, which can only apply to a plastic surgeon who is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with at least 12 years of surgical and medical education, plus 5 years of specialist training at the post-graduate level.
Secondly, Dr Layt says, reading reviews of the plastic surgeon and the practice that have been submitted by previous patients can often provide good insight into the level of care and the results experienced by others. Viewing before-and-after photos of patients who have had procedures performed by the surgeon under consideration can also give individuals a general look at the results the doctor is capable of producing. These photo galleries are often available on the practice’s website; however, if they are not, Dr Layt says prospective patients should feel free to make an enquiry at the office as to whether they have before-and-after photos that can be reviewed.
Once these steps have been performed and the prospective patient has found a plastic surgeon they feel may be the right choice, Dr Layt advises that a consultation with the doctor should be scheduled. This initial meeting is extremely important for both the patient and the doctor. The consultation allows the patient to evaluate their rapport with the plastic surgeon, ask any questions they may have, and determine whether they will feel confident enough in their experience and abilities that their goals can be effectively met. Whether the procedure under consideration is breast augmentation, tummy tuck surgery, facelift treatment, or any number of other procedures designed to enhance one’s appearance, Dr Layt notes that patients should always feel that their doctor is listening attentively and explaining all aspects of the experience honestly and thoroughly. Ultimately, Dr Layt explains, the decision to undergo these types of treatments often represents a major step in many patients’ lives, and finding a qualified, experienced, and caring provider can significantly increase the chances of success.
