At the British Museum, a curated selection of cultural and creative works themed on Wannian Traditional Rice Culture was on display at the museum’s Great Court, with on-site briefings delivered to visitors, thus facilitating the cultural and historical interaction between China and the West.
Around the Lantern Festival, against the vibrant festive backdrop of King's Cross Market in London, the chamber of commerce hosted a special themed promotion of Wannian Traditional Rice Culture for international attendees, which further elevated the international visibility and influence of China's agricultural civilization.
In the 1990s, a China-US joint archaeological team conducted archaeological excavations in Wannian County, where pottery shards dating back approximately 20,000 years and phytoliths of artificially cultivated rice with a history of some 12,000 years were unearthed. This groundbreaking discovery was named one of the Top 10 Archaeological Discoveries of 2012 by Archaeology, a leading American academic journal, and also listed among the 100 Major Archaeological Discoveries of China in the 20th Century by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS). The local rice cultivation customs have been inherited for thousands of years. In 2010, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) designated the Wannian Rice Cultivation Cultural System as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) and awarded it the official certification plaque.
