The Pearl Lam Podcast today marks one year since launching its first episode on YouTube. The podcast, which is hosted by Pearl Lam (林明珠) has garnered acclaim for its idiosyncratic interviews, which feel like a catch up between old friends infused with the diverting and inquisitive style that has become the Pearl Lam signature.
Whilst Pearl Lam is best known as a doyenne of the contemporary art world whose eponymous galleries in Hong Kong and Shanghai are recognised for their intellectual impact and ambition, the Pearl Lam Podcast focuses on disruptors and change makers, often from beyond the art world.
The podcast is always filmed on location as it follows Pearl Lam on her boundless global travels, frequently returning to locations including Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Paris, London, New York, LA and Miami.
During its first-year, subscribers to The Pearl Lam Podcast have enjoyed a diverse range of guests and thought-provoking conversations. In New York, Pearl Lam met museum Director and Curator Melissa Chiu to discuss the impact of the Cultural Revolution. In Seoul, Pearl Lam met popular DJ Raiden to discuss whether an overemphasis on social media visibility can compromise the quality of the art produced in the music industry.
In Hong Kong, Pearl Lam met Film Director Ray Yeung to discuss LGBTQ+ representation in modern cinema. And in New York Pearl Lam met Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Barboza to examine media portrayals of the US-China relationship and to explore how art and culture, as a soft power, could foster a mutual respect between the two nations.
In Paris, Pearl Lam met Amin Jaffer, Senior Curator of the Al Thani Collection, and they reflected on the challenges of establishing a museum in one of the world’s most culturally dense regions. And in London, Pearl Lam met Jan Dalley, Arts Editor of The Financial Times, who credits The Pearl Lam Podcast as “a fabulous series”.
Podcast host Pearl Lam expects to have a busy second year recording new episodes of The Pearl Lam Podcast, during which time she will also be opening a new larger gallery space in Central in Hong Kong, whilst also maintaining an ambitious full schedule of exhibitions at her Shanghai gallery to the end of 2026. Her gallery will also be exhibiting at West Bund Art & Design in Shanghai, Frieze Seoul, Frieze London, Art Basel Paris and Art Basel Miami.
Building on her platform as a leading cultural commentator and art market expert, Pearl Lam will also be increasingly visible as a panellist and guest speaker. Recently Pearl Lam was a guest speaker at the 2024 DPP x SUUM Art Forum in South Korea; and in October 2024 Pearl Lam will be a guest speaker at London events including 1-54 at Somerset House, Red Flagged at Soho House and the Women in Art Fair at The Mall Galleries.
Pearl Lam is also reinvigorating The China Art Foundation, her philanthropic charity focused on building cultural bridges between China and the West, with an ambitious new creative project expected to be announced shortly. The influential gallerist and podcast host is also expanding and elevating her not-for-profit artist residency program in Shanghai in an expansion of her ongoing commitment to promote cross-cultural dialogue.
