SLC Plumbing Services Companies Note Success of Adopt a Storm Drain Program

Local Salt Lake City, Utah based plumbing service companies such as Stallion Plumbing are acknowledging the success of the Adopt a Storm Drain Program since it's launch.

Launched in 2022, the Adopt a Storm Drain Program in Salt Lake City encouraged residents to adopt a storm drain in their neighborhood and spend approximately 15 minutes twice a month clearing the waterways to prevent flooding. Local plumbing services companies like Stallion Plumbing are acknowledging the success of the program since it was implemented, citing the fashion in which Utah residents prepare for the possibility of flooding when the snow of winter melts - thus enabling the reduction of localized flooding risk.

“Storm drains get clogged with plastic bottles, Styrofoam cups, cigarette butts, leaves and more, and this can lead to localized flooding,” says Alex Sibilla, professional plumber and owner of Stallion Plumbing. “Aside from that, clearing the storm drains can also reduce pollution of the waterways, since trash in the community will often end up below the ground and in the drains. The water in Salt Lake City’s storm drains reportedly flows directly into creeks and streams that eventually make it to the Jordan River and the Great Salt Lake, and this Adopt a Storm Drain Program has been a way for our community to get engaged in keeping our waterways clean; indeed, we have found that those who have immediate access to a storm drain have taken an active role in helping the city keep our storm drains flowing.”

Residents who adopted a storm drain were afforded the opportunity to give it a name, as well, with the Department of Public Utilities’ website providing a map of all the adopted storm drains. According to SLC officials, the names of the drains have included references to regular street names as well as “cheeky monikers” like “It’s Draining Men,” “Purple Drain” and “Toxic Sludge Collector.”

Residents interested in adopting a drain were advised to follow a number of steps, beginning with identifying a storm drain in their neighborhood and noting the location or address, and moving on to filling out a registration form, waiting for a confirmation email along with more information about tips to prevent stormwater runoff pollution and how to clean the storm drain grate, tracking their impact by keeping a rough total of the debris collected and emailing that number to program representatives, and, finally, sending any updates they have of their storm drain through a specialized form.

“Officials advised residents to never remove the grate - rather, if the drain seemed to be clogged, they were encouraged to contact the city staff via a dedicated phone number,” adds Sibilla. “At this point, the city would send someone to take care of it, while offering other useful tips to residents including never picking up any hypodermic needles, wearing gloves when picking up trash and wearing a mask to prevent dust inhalation…all very good recommendations we wholeheartedly agree with.”
