Florida Painting Services Companies Analyze State Painting Classification Codes

Miami-Based, Florida Painting Company evaluates the states new classification codes for employees of painting businesses based on the type of work being performed by the employees.

Florida has implemented classification codes for employees of painting businesses based on the type of work being performed by the employees, with many of the state’s painting services companies - including Florida Painting Company of Miami - recently taking the time to analyze and comment on them.

“The Sunshine State is home to nearly 22 million people, including millions of homeowners and business owners, allowing Florida painters to take advantage of the need for residential and commercial painting professionals,” states Florida Painting Company’s Sebastian Bednarski. “Still, before a painting company can apply paint to brush, it may need a painting license to legally work in the state - and when we say ‘painting license,’ we’re referring to a general contractor license, as there’s no specific painter license available in Florida. To this end, we have been working with other Miami-based painting contractors in analyzing the state’s painting classification codes, from 5474 to 6874/6884, in an attempt to make things run more smoothly for all employees.”

Starting with Code 5474, this classification represents the general painting classification, contemplating exterior and interior painting of residential or commercial structures that are constructed of wood, concrete, stone or a combination thereof regardless of height. According to Bednarski and other Miami area painters, commercial structures under this code encompass - but are not limited to - office buildings, stores, theaters and auditoriums, with the Florida rate for this classification being $7.91 for every 100 dollars of remuneration since 2011.

The 9501 classification is applied to employees engaged in the business of painting in the insured’s shop or those risks engaged in sign painting/lettering at a customer’s premises. Articles painted may include goods manufactured by others or component parts made from wood, metal, glass, leather or plastic, the operations normally encompassing the preparation of the paint-receiving surface, which may involve degreasing, sanding or wire brushing; the application of paint by hand brushing, rolling, spraying or dipping; and drying in ovens using infrared lamps or natural ventilation. Since 2011, says Bednarski, the Florida rate for this classification was $3.28 for every 100 dollars of remuneration.

The 9505 classification is applied to employees engaged primarily in the painting or repainting of automobile or carriage bodies, the operations contemplating sanding, masking, spray painting and baking. The 5037 classification, meanwhile, is applied to employees that paint metal structures which exceed two stories in height - defined for commercial structures as being 15 feet in height - with the painting of metal structures falling within the scope of Code 5037 encompassing the metal skeleton frameworks of buildings exceeding two stories, smokestacks, cross-country power line towers, radio towers, television towers, aircraft, aircraft beacons towers and observation towers.

Bednarski notes that Code 5037 is not intended to apply to painting the interior or exterior of buildings or other structures which are made of wood, concrete, stone or a combination thereof.

Classifications 6874 and 6884 are used for employees that paint ship hulls.

“There are Florida-based companies that can help painting businesses classify their payroll into the appropriate classification code, while providing them quotes on Florida workers’ compensation insurance,” concludes Bednarski.
