The Foundation for a Drug-Free World Educates on How Crime Statistics and Drugs are Related.

A drop in crime in Washington, DC, could be related to drug abuse prevention strategies

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World’s DC chapter was very active this summer with numerous booths every week at various outdoor events. August brings the prospect of going back to school. Most outdoor activities are winding down, including booths with information on the dangers of abusing drugs. The Foundation for a Drug-Free World is continuing its work in educating youth and families through community programs and enrichment activities and asking for volunteers who want to help the community.

Crime and drug abuse are interrelated. Research shows that 70% of male prisoners in the US are drug abusers, compared to 11.2% of the entire male population.

In the Washington, DC, area, violent crime statistics are down 35%, and on trend to be at the lowest level since that statistic was started 20 years ago. Many factors have contributed to this great reduction in crime, including drug prevention and education. Educating youth on avoiding dangerous drugs, which have been statistically tied to violence, could be a major factor in this reduction in violent crime.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World has worked with police officials, court services agencies, behavioral health agencies, and other drug prevention groups to bring attention to the dangers of synthetic opioids, particularly fentanyl, which carries a very strong possibility of overdose and death.

Thalia Ghiglia, of Drug-Free World’s DC chapter, said, “A common question I get is, ‘What can I do to help make things better?’ Accurate and factual drug education on a grassroots level is the undercut to all of our drug abuse issues. I urge everyone to get educated and to pass important information on. That's how we are going to build a better society. What could be more important than protecting our youth and all citizens from the harmful effects of drugs? We need to educate youth and families to protect themselves from drugs and the crime that is inevitably connected with drug abuse.”

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World offers free booklets and a free documentary featuring interviews with former drug users telling the truth about their experiences with various drugs. https://www.drugfreeworld.org/videos/documentary.
