AfriKin has concluded its most successful event to date, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the AfriKin Art Fair. Held alongside Miami Art Week/Art Basel Miami, this year’s AfriKin Art Fair brought together global artists, cultural enthusiasts, and patrons to honor and celebrate the vibrancy of African art, culture, and heritage. With a stunning lineup of events and notable guests, the week-long fair has been hailed as an unparalleled success.
The milestone event kicked off with a spectacular All-White VIP Vernissage on December 1, 2024, at Maison AfriKin. The evening sparkled with notable guests from the community, immersive artistic experiences, and a profound exploration of the Black world through the works of 74 esteemed artists from 33 countries. Among the evening’s highlights was the official proclamation by Councilman Scott Galvin of North Miami, naming Miami Art Week in North Miami as AfriKin Art Week going forward. This historic declaration solidified AfriKin’s place as a cornerstone of cultural and artistic celebration in the region.
Adding to the night’s prestige, honorees were celebrated for their exceptional contributions to the arts. Maxim, the frontman of the UK’s group Prodigy, was honored for his outstanding achievements, while Cameroonian photographer Angèle Etoundi Essamba received the AfriKin Award of Excellence. The award, presented by Lisette den Breems, the Consul General of the Netherlands in Miami, honored Essamba’s powerful photographic work and her efforts to elevate the voices of Black women in underrepresented communities.
The evening’s energy was electrified by breathtaking performances, including captivating dances from Zest Collective, Delou Africa, and Leah Nadia Sol. Spoken word artists and musicians from across Global Africa kept the pulse alive, while attendees delighted in expertly crafted cocktails and a feast of African delicacies. The vibrant and joyous atmosphere of the opening event set the tone for an unforgettable week.
Throughout the week, the 2024 AfriKin Art Fair delivered an engaging lineup of events, from insightful artist talks and dynamic panel discussions to film screenings with director Q&As, cultural workshops and student field trips. The AfriKin: Guardians of Time event honored Miami-Dade first responders, reinforcing the fair’s commitment to celebrating community heroes. Attendees also enjoyed the AfriKin Fashion Runway: Weave of Wonders, a breathtaking showcase of Global Africa’s designers and models. With the building packed to capacity, vivid colors, radiant smiles, and stunning garments took center stage as cameras flashed and audiences cheered. The energy reached its peak as Alfonso Brooks engaged the crowd, as the various performances brought everyone to their feet in joyous celebration.
The fair’s art exhibition saw numerous pieces find new homes, while performances, discussions, and networking opportunities left a lasting impression on guests and participants alike. “Many paintings found new homes. The artist talks were insightful, and the performances were simply outstanding. The fashion runway was the perfect culmination to the week’s events. We hold so much gratitude to those that saw the vision and embarked on this journey with us. It is so fulfilling” remarked Alfonso Brooks, founder and curator of AfriKin.
AfriKin’s organizers expressed deep gratitude to the artists with many traveling from near and far, sponsors, patrons, and partners who made the 2024 fair such a success. A special thank you to the City of North Miami, councilman Scott Galvin and Celebrate West Africa, and Dutch Culture USA for their support. By continuing to create dynamic and inclusive events, AfriKin is fulfilling its mission of championing the Black world and preserving and sharing African culture with the world. The 2024 fair reached unprecedented levels of engagement, showcasing the vitality and innovation of African contemporary artistry while educating and inspiring guests from around the globe.
From the success of its 10th anniversary fair to its exciting upcoming events for 2025, AfriKin continues to champion global Africa and the Black world, through culture, and community on a global scale. Stay tuned for what promises to be another extraordinary year ahead.
