Susannah Winters Simpson is a hospice nurse, with work having been published in North American Review, Potomac, Wisconsin Review, South Carolina Review, POET, Nimrod International, Poet Lore, Sequestrum, and SWWIM among others. Susannah has had three books of poetry published: Geography of Love & Exile, Mother Wind and Dharma of Death & Desire. The fourth book Blue Agape is forthcoming in 2025. Simpson is the founder and co-director of the Performance Poets of the Palm Beaches, Creatrix of Imagine Women Writing Retreats and Founder of Palm Beach Players for Change. Susannah currently facilitates both creative writing and WriteRECOVERY groups, and holds an MFA from Bennington and a PhD from SUNY/Binghamton.
Mother Wind
Dr. Susannah Winters Simpson, in addition to being a hospice nurse, is a gifted poet and a deeply observant writer. Dharma of Death & Desire
Dharma of Death & Desire (November 12, 2024 via Shanti Arts Press) showcases Simpson’s years in hospice nursing, psychiatric nursing, and work with recovering addicts. These decades of working in proximity to death and dying inform Susannah’s view of living. The aforementioned context has provided Susannah with deeply moving insights into the very human challenges faced by many. Susannah’s remarkable eye for illuminating the details that bring readers into a scene are no doubt due to her years of bearing witness, with poems offering a common thread to grasp, especially when writing about grief and loss. Lastly, Susannah comforts and challenges readers to cultivate hopes and desires, and to bear disappointments with compassion. This poet shares the gravitas not only of life’s inevitable passing, but also those exquisite moments occurring each day that enjoin readers to live a meaningful life.
