HACEY And Access Corporation Partner To Tackle Maternal Mortality In Nigeria Through Project Agbebi

By: Get News

Lagos, Nigeria - HACEY Health Initiative, a non-governmental organization dedicated to improving the health and well-being of women and children, has partnered with Access Corporation to address the urgent issue of maternal mortality in Nigeria. Nigeria currently has a maternal mortality ratio of 512 deaths per 100,000 live births, making it one of the highest in the world.

Through their joint Project Agbebi, HACEY and Access Corporation are working to reduce maternal mortality by providing access to quality maternal healthcare services, education and awareness, and community support to pregnant women and new mothers.

The project aims to reach 30,000 pregnant women across Nigeria by distributing 1000 birthing kits to 10 communities in 30 states and engaging pregnant women in these communities with information, education, and communication materials. The donated birthing kits will help improve safe deliveries and potentially reduce complications during childbirth, positively impacting maternal and neonatal outcomes.

To further support the project, HACEY and Access Corporation have also trained health workers at primary health facilities in Oyo, Ogun, and Osun states on safe delivery practices and best practices. The project aims to establish community-based support groups for pregnant women, provide maternal health and financial literacy training to pregnant women in project communities, and increase access to safe and free birthing kits for pregnant women in project communities.

Speaking on the occasion of the project outreach, Rhoda Robinson, Executive Director of HACEY, emphasized the importance of addressing the underlying factors contributing to poor maternal health outcomes in Nigeria. "Many women in Nigeria face challenges in accessing quality healthcare services during pregnancy and childbirth, particularly in rural areas. Through Project Agbebi, we aim to provide community-based support, maternal health education, and access to safe birthing kits for pregnant women to improve maternal health outcomes.

Omobolanle Victor-Laniyan, Head of Sustainability at Access Corporation, emphasized the need for providing life-saving information and support during pregnancy to improve maternal and newborn health outcomes. "Through Project Agbebi, we hope to train mothers and expectant women, as well as health professionals, on safe birthing practices and aid them in making informed decisions."

Beneficiaries of the project have expressed their gratitude towards HACEY and Access Corporation for the support provided. Khadija Ogunlesi, one of the beneficiaries of the project, said, "I for one didn't use to take my finances seriously, and it's not something they talk to us about in the facility. With what you have shared with us now, I will go and start saving ahead for my baby, even if it's a small kolo."

Fatoki from Ojoo Community in Oyo State said, "We are grateful to HACEY for supporting our women with these birthing kits. You won't understand how necessary these are if you are not in the facility."

Islamia Adejoke from Ibafo Community in Ogun State said, "Thank you so much, I am grateful. I have learnt something new today, and I am so happy about the markintouch that is in the birthing kit. Markintouch of that length is close to three thousand naira, that's a lot of money in this economy, and you shared it to more than 100 of us in Ibafo community today."

Project Agbebi leverages partnerships, innovative strategies, and evidence-based interventions to make a meaningful impact on reducing maternal mortality and improving maternal health in Nigeria. The project collaborates with local health systems, policymakers, and other stakeholders to advocate for policy changes and improve the availability, accessibility, and affordability of maternal health services.
