Balfour Beatty proudly announces that two of its distinguished leaders, Mark Johnnie and Pete Distefano, were recognized at the 2025 Carolinas Associated General Contractors (CAGC) Summit & Expo held in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Their achievements reflect the CAGC and AGC of America’s commitment to excellence, leadership and community impact in the construction industry.
Mark Johnnie, Balfour Beatty US Civils senior vice president and chief operating officer, was one of three inducted into CAGC’s Hall of Fame which honors the dedication, resilience and accomplishments of professionals who lead by example and inspire the next generation of industry leaders.
Mark is a 27-year Balfour Beatty veteran, having led major infrastructure projects including the Golden Gate Bridge, San Mateo Bridge Widening and White Oak River Bridge. Named vice president and Southeast region manager in 2006, he supported project teams in the deliveries of the Surf City Bridge Replacement, U.S. 70 Havelock Bypass, Maysville Bypass, Harkers Island Bridge replacement and the Northeast Water Purification Plant. In his current role as senior vice president and chief operating officer of Southeast and Southwest Infrastructure operations, Mark continues driving the company's growth strategy across both regions, cultivating a strong local reputation with industry partners and clients and supporting project teams in the deliveries of vital infrastructure projects.
Mark has also been serving CAGC since 2007 and in several capacities, including his recent appointment to Board Chairman (2023-2024), membership on the CAGC/NCDOT Structure Committee (2007-2014), the CAGC Joint Committee (2014-2022), as co-chair and chair of the CAGC Heavy Highway Division (2014-2015), as Director at Large of the 2018 CAGC Board of Directors and as Treasurer (2020-2021) and Vice Chair (2019 and 2022) of the CAGC Executive Board of Directors.
Reflecting on the honor, Mark Johnnie states, “I’m humbled by this recognition. It’s a reflection of the incredible teams I’ve worked with and the values we uphold at Balfour Beatty—people-first, safety always and a relentless drive to build better communities.”
Additionally, Pete Distefano, Balfour Beatty US Civils operations manager, was named one of CAGC’s 2025 Top Young Leaders, a distinction awarded to two professionals under 45 who demonstrate exceptional leadership and community engagement.
Pete’s more than 20-year career with Balfour Beatty has been defined by his ability to lead complex infrastructure projects across the Southeast with precision, creativity and a relentless drive for excellence. His leadership has delivered accelerated schedules and cost savings on projects such as Maysville Bypass and the Harkers Island Bridge Replacement project. Most notably, Pete led the monumental Harkers Island Bridge Replacement in North Carolina to substantial completion a full year ahead of schedule—a rare feat in highway and bridge construction.
“Being named a Top Young Leader is an honor I share with my mentors, teammates and the communities we serve. I’m passionate about building not just infrastructure, but opportunities for others to grow and lead,” said Pete Distefano.
