Budderfly Virtual Power Plant Recognized by TIME as One of the Best Inventions of 2025

Recognition reinforces Budderfly’s position as a national leader in sustainable energy innovation and behind-the-meter Virtual Power Plant technology

Budderfly, one of the fastest growing energy companies in the U.S, today announced that its Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform has been recognized by TIME as one of the Best Inventions of 2025, featured in the publication’s annual list of groundbreaking innovations shaping a more sustainable future. Budderfly’s VPP appears in the Sustainability category of this year’s issue.

Through its proprietary Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS), Budderfly transforms restaurants, gyms, retail locations, and office buildings into active grid assets that help stabilize local energy grids. By responding instantly to demand needs and price signals, customers gain more reliable power, reduce costs, and access new revenue streams that help small business owners thrive on tight margins.

“This recognition from TIME reinforces the importance of what we’re building,” said Al Subbloie, CEO of Budderfly. “Our Virtual Power Plant brings advanced energy management to the businesses that have been left out of the clean energy conversation. We make it easy for them to participate by owning the infrastructure, managing the technology, and delivering real savings. The result is a network of small commercial sites that can now support the grid, lower emissions, and strengthen their own bottom line.”

Budderfly’s VPP recently moved from proof of concept to full-scale coast-to-coast VPP, launching real-time dispatch across multiple U.S. independent system operators (ISOs) offering VPP services to CAISO (California), ISONE (New England), PJM (BGE & ComEd), as well as direct Utility programs in MISO territory. Budderfly integrates on-site efficiency, solar, and storage systems into a flexible demand-side network, enabling thousands of its commercial sites to participate in the energy transition. With over 8,000 locations across the US and an average year-over-year growth rate of 66%, Budderfly is well-positioned to bring the previously underserved commercial SMB sector into the modern era of grid transformation.

The 2025 TIME Best Inventions list features 300 innovations across categories such as sustainability, health, AI, and design, selected for originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact.
