Ramon Aparece Recognized as a Leader in Sustainable Golf Course Management

Florida Superintendent Advances Environmental Stewardship and Championship Turf Standards

JUPITER, FL / ACCESS Newswire / March 17, 2026 / Ramon Aparece, Golf Course Superintendent at Palm Vista Country Club in Palm Beach County, continues to gain recognition across Florida's golf industry for his leadership in sustainable turf management, hurricane preparedness, and environmental stewardship.

With more than two decades of experience in Florida's challenging coastal climate, Aparece oversees a 27-hole championship layout, manages a staff of 32 full-time and seasonal employees, and directs a $2.8 million annual maintenance budget. His work focuses on maintaining high-performance playing conditions while reducing environmental impact.

"Florida is one of the toughest places in the country to grow turf," said Aparece. "We deal with heat, salt, humidity, storms, and year-round play. You have to plan ahead and manage from the soil up."

From Local Roots to Statewide Impact

Born in Fort Myers and raised in Cape Coral, Aparece is the son of Cuban immigrants who instilled in him a strong work ethic and respect for the outdoors. At age 14, he began retrieving golf balls from water hazards at a municipal course. His curiosity about turf maintenance quickly grew into a career path.

After graduating from Mariner High School, Aparece earned a Bachelor of Science in Turfgrass Science with a minor in Environmental Horticulture from the University of Florida. He completed internships at TPC Sawgrass and a private club in Naples before beginning his professional career as an Assistant Superintendent at a championship course in Southwest Florida.

He later earned the Certified Golf Course Superintendent (CGCS) designation through the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) and holds Florida pesticide applicator licenses in turf and ornamental management.

"Education never stops in this field," Aparece said. "Grass responds to climate, traffic, and technology changes. If you're not learning, you're falling behind."

Advancing Water Conservation and Sustainable Practices

In 2011, Aparece became Superintendent at Gulf Dunes Golf Club in Sarasota, where he led major environmental upgrades. Under his leadership, the course reduced water consumption by 28 percent through smart irrigation systems and reclaimed water integration. He also transitioned large areas of rough to drought-tolerant Bahia and Zoysia grasses.

The course earned designation as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for Golf following the implementation of pollinator-friendly landscaping and expanded native plant zones.

"You can have championship conditions and protect natural habitats at the same time," Aparece said. "It's about using data and making long-term decisions."

Leadership at Palm Vista Country Club

In 2018, Aparece was recruited to Palm Vista Country Club in Palm Beach County. The private club features advanced SubAir drainage systems and precision drone mapping for turf health analysis.

Aparece is known for his preventative agronomy strategy, which prioritizes soil health, moisture monitoring, and data-driven irrigation scheduling. His expertise includes managing Bermudagrass and Seashore Paspalum, two turf varieties common to coastal Florida courses.

"Preventative management saves time and protects the turf," he said. "If you're reacting to problems, you're already late."

Hurricane Preparedness and Crisis Response

Operating in Florida also requires strong disaster planning. Aparece has led recovery operations following Hurricane Irma (2017) and Hurricane Ian (2022), implementing equipment relocation strategies, pump station protection plans, and coordinated debris removal efforts.

"Storm prep starts well before landfall," he said. "You have to think through every detail so your team can act fast."

Under his direction, courses have reopened weeks ahead of projected timelines following major storms.

Industry Recognition and Community Engagement

Aparece received the Environmental Stewardship Award from the South Florida Golf Association in 2020 and was nominated for FGCSA Superintendent of the Year in 2021. He is an active member of the Florida Golf Course Superintendents Association (FGCSA) and regularly mentors students interested in turfgrass careers.

He also collaborates with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to ensure wildlife habitats are protected within course boundaries.

"Golf courses are green spaces inside growing communities," Aparece said. "We have a responsibility to manage them wisely."

Looking Ahead

Aparece lives in Jupiter, Florida, with his wife, Elena, and their two children. Outside of work, he enjoys saltwater fishing and coaching youth soccer.

His long-term vision centers on advancing sustainable golf practices while mentoring the next generation of turfgrass professionals.

"Great golf conditions are built from the soil up and from the team out," he said. "If we invest in both, the future of Florida golf is strong."
