The Promotrice Belle Arti Liguria gallery will inaugurate a major retrospective of Ruffo Caselli’s work on March 8, 2025, bringing the pioneering artist’s vision to the public of Genoa for the first time. The exhibition, “Cybernetic Existentialism,” explores Caselli’s unique approach to digitalization, global interconnectivity, and the evolving relationship between humanity and technology.
Caselli (1932–2020), who was born in Florence and spent much of his career in Milan, developed a distinctive artistic language that blended traditional media with futuristic themes. His work has been exhibited in prominent Russian museums, as well as in cultural institutions across Europe and the United States. This retrospective, hosted at Promotrice Belle Arti Liguria on Via degli Archi 39r, is made possible through a collaboration with San Donato Gallery and the Center for the Multidisciplinary Study of Cybernetic Existentialism.
Dr. Mario Moneta, President of Promotrice Belle Arti Liguria, emphasizes the importance of this exhibition in light of the institution’s long-standing mission to promote innovative artistic expression. Founded in 1848 under the patronage of H.R.H. Prince Carlo Alberto, the gallery continues to serve as a cultural bridge, fostering engagement with both classical and avant-garde works. Dr. Moneta notes that Caselli’s artistic exploration of the digitized world remains profoundly relevant today, offering insight into contemporary concerns about identity, isolation, and the mechanization of human experience.
Through a masterful fusion of painting, collage, and mixed media, Caselli’s work challenges viewers to reflect on the increasing overlap between artificial intelligence and human consciousness. His images, characterized by a refined elegance and subtle irony, depict figures transitioning from human to machine—offering a prescient vision of modern-day concerns surrounding automation and digital dependence. By positioning his work within the broader discourse on technology’s societal impact, the exhibition invites audiences to consider how the rapid integration of digital processes is shaping personal and collective identities.
This retrospective is both a celebration of Caselli’s artistic contributions as well as a critical examination of his prophetic warnings. By engaging with his thought-provoking compositions, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of how art can serve as both an aesthetic experience and a medium for exploring urgent philosophical questions.
