Boca Raton, FL - The Spanish River wrestling team has had a historic season, taking home trophies at nearly every tournament they entered. The team displayed exceptional performances, winning the Annual Joe Bonnie Invitational and the Cardinal Newman Quad. They also secured runner-up finishes at the Rumble at the Ridge and the 45th Annual Palm Beach Holiday Classic, along with a third-place finish at the 2025 Boys PBCWHOF.
In what has been their best performance in two decades, Spanish River placed 4th out of 32 teams at this year’s regional tournament. This marks a significant milestone for the program and solidifies the team’s resurgence under new leadership.
Four Wrestlers Heading to the State Tournament From Spanish River
Spanish River will send four wrestlers to the state tournament at Silver Spurs Arena, demonstrating the program’s strength and dedication. The qualifiers include:
- Santiago Alvarez (138 lbs) – 34-7 record, finished 2nd at Regionals.
- Nick Boselli (215 lbs) – 32-10 record, finished 3rd at Regionals.
- Daniel Alvarez (144 lbs) – 29-4 record, Regional Champion.
- Enzo DaSilva (175 lbs) – 33-5 record, Regional Champion.
Notably, Daniel Alvarez became Spanish River’s first state placer in 20 years, following in the footsteps of his coach, Sean Kirtz, who achieved the same honor in 2004. Kirtz, now coaching at Spanish River beside head coach Greg Stewart, has played a key role in Alvarez’s development, making the achievement even more special.
A New Era Under Coach Greg Stewart and Sean Kirtz
This season also marks the first year for coaches Greg Stewart and Sean Kirtz at the helm of Spanish River’s wrestling program. The team had previously been coached by Maher for 12 years, and the transition has already proven to be a major success. He stuck around the team even after the retirement to help out the seniors.
For Sean Kirtz, this return to coaching has been particularly meaningful. His last wrestler before stepping away in 2017 was named Wrestler of the Year, and now he hopes to repeat that accomplishment in his first season back. Kirtz took a break from coaching to focus on raising his child as a single parent, but his passion for the sport and commitment to developing young athletes have never wavered.
Under the guidance of Greg Stewart and Sean Kirtz, Spanish River wrestling has undergone a dramatic transformation. Their experience and leadership together has instilled a renewed sense of purpose within the team, and their mentorship has been invaluable in helping wrestlers reach new heights.
A Bright Future for Spanish River Wrestling
With an impressive season, a dedicated coaching staff, and a strong group of wrestlers, Spanish River has firmly reestablished itself as a competitive force in Florida high school wrestling. As they head into the state tournament, the future looks promising for the program, and fans eagerly await what’s next for this rising team.
